The importance of species identification for ant control
At Jim’s termite and pest control Darwin, we know that ants may be small in structure, but large in numbers.
We realise that nest location, species identification, and thorough inspections are crucial to providing you with a successful ant treatment.
The first stage of our treatment involves spending the time to observe the activities of the Ants, their feeding traits and the possible location of their nest.
We have a variety of treatment options from baiting, dusting and surface sprays. A successful treatment can be reliant on which species of ant we are dealing with and their preference of food source.
Ant control – why ants are classed as pests
Ants are well known to invade kitchens and a variety of food service areas.
Their scavenging of animal excrement, refuse areas and other diseased organisms accelerates their potential to pass on diseases to humans.
There have been instances of ants passing on salmonella and other bacteria via their body or digestive tract.
Let’s not forget about their reputation for destroying appliance circuit boards and electrical wiring.

The life and habits of ants
Ants are extremely versatile insects that live in mostly large colonies with a permanent nest.
There are three castes of ants:
• Male • Female • Worker
The workers are responsible for nest building, protection of the colony and the scavenging of food.
They create well defined trails between their nest and food source, usually marked by smells or pheromone secretions.
Many ant species have only one reproductive female, known as the queen.
Unfortunately for us Darwin locals we are home to some very aggressive ant species.
The likes of the Ginger Ant and the Darwin Bull Ant can be very aggressive. Bites can cause great discomfort and extreme swelling
